The Charm Of Gozo Island
Will Have You Captivated
If you're looking for a more rural, relaxed and peaceful getaway, the charm of Gozo Island will have you captivated.
Gozo is the main sister island of Malta and the second largest island in the Maltese archipelago, but even so, it's tiny. It's only 67 square kilometres with a coastline stretching 43 kilometres and a population of about 31,000.
The people of Gozo enjoy a more simple, laid-back and "greener" lifestyle than Malta Island.
It is to become an ecological island, Eco-Gozo, with the Maltese Government set to invest 25 million euro into the island during 2010 to 2012.
There is a passenger and car ferry that takes about 25 minutes to get you from Cirkewwa on the northern part of Malta to the port of Mgarr on the island of Gozo.
Right in the centre of Gozo Island is the capital of the island, Victoria which is surrounded by Gozo's thirteen villages.
It is virtually an undiscovered island paradise with spectacular scenery and rugged coastline.
It has some beautiful beaches and bays, including Ramla Bay with it's clear turquoise waters and orange-red sand…
Now I'm not a diver, but it's also rumoured to have some of the best dive sites in the Mediterranean.

You can see some beautiful photos of all these attractions in a slideshow here.
- Some of the beautiful churches -- there's 22 in total -- with their gorgeous baroque architecture. Xewkija church has a dome bigger than St Paul's Cathedral in London.

- The spectacular Azure Window and Blue Hole at the foot of the cliffs at Dwejra Point.
- The main fishing villages of Marsalforn and Xlendi and the traditional colourful fishing boats.
- The old Citadel which was first fortified around 1500 BC.
And if you're into walking, there is a series of 4 booklets that you can buy through bookshops that will take you on some of the most beautiful country walks across Gozo Island.
As far as accommodation is concerned, if you want total luxury you might like to think about booking a traditional rustic limestone farmhouse, complete with its own swimming pool.
Get a few friends or couples together and split the costs. You'll have more fun too!
Of course there are plenty of other accommodation options available from 4 and 5 star hotels through to villas and self catering properties or anything in between that will suit any budget.
